Historically, after the Meiji Restoration, Hyūga Province was renamed Miyazaki Prefecture. See Abolition of the han system article for detailed discussion.
In May 2010 the Governor declared a state of emergency because of foot and mouth disease.[1]
Miyazaki Prefecture is located on the eastern coast of the island of Kyūshū. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the south and east, Ōita Prefecture to the north, and Kumamoto and Kagoshima Prefectures to the west. It is one of only two locations on Earth where the fungus Chorioactis geaster is found.[1]
Nine cities, 18 towns, and three villages are located in Miyazaki Prefecture:

With the mergers held across Japan, Miyazaki Prefecture is one of the prefectures which has only a handful of new cities with new names (Tokyo, Osaka, Kanagawa, Yamagata, and Tottori Prefectures are others).
